Barque Theone

One of the last examples of the so-called emigration sailing ships was the barque Theone. In contrast to many other ships, which, due to the economic situation, were only used for the emigration voyage in the 19th century, she was specially constructed for this line of business. The Theone was commissioned in 1863 by the shipping company T. L. Brauer & Son in Bremen from the shipyard J. C. Tecklenborg in Geestemünde, the part of present-day Bremerhaven belonging to the Kingdom of Hanover. She was completed by 1864. There are notes in the Bremen shipping records that say of the barque Theone: “Run by E. Helmers, Bremen, built in oak with a deck and fixed between-deck beams, peoples’ quarters above deck and with inboard planking.” Little is known about the voyages of the Theone and her whereabouts.
